About Maria Allerton
I have been in clinical practice in Sydney, Australia since 2013 and consult clients from all countries around the world via Zoom. I have Gilbert's syndrome and have been on a mission to put together the best resources on this condition in the world.
I am a fully qualified Nutritionist (Adv.Dip Nutritional Medicine) and a certified/registered member of ATMS (Australian Traditional Medicine Society). Trained in all modes of Functional Medicine testing, including gastrointestinal testing and analysis, microbiome management, thyroid and hormonal testing and treatment and toxicity assessment and treatment.
I have extensive clinical experience addressing complicated cases of Gilbert's syndrome as well as other genetic gut disorders through dietary strategies, Functional medicine testing and treatment of functional gut imbalances, mental health, hormonal imbalances, detoxification and nutrient deficiencies.
Food, cooking and nutrition have always been my passion and my key interest-‘food as medicine’- has been the guiding principle in my personal life and clinic work.
My gut problems began in high school, with bloating and regular pains following various meals. This was diagnosed as IBS and Gilbert's Syndrome three years later. Actually they began when I was a baby with jaundice, throwing up food and recurring bronchitis who had at least 40 rounds of antibiotics by 10 years of age!
For 10 years after that I struggled with intermittent bouts of IBS (depending on stress levels), very poor digestion tending to constipation, SIBO (small intestinal overgrowth), severe food intolerances, allergies and hayfever, intermittent depression, thyroid dysfunction and adrenal burnout, weight problems as well as heavy metal toxicity.
In my health journey, I consulted numerous conventional and complementary health practitioners. And, to be honest, I never found somebody who really “gets it” and can see through all the test results, symptoms, emotions and history and put it all together. I decided to become that practitioner, which is what I thrive on in my clinic work.
What makes my approach to healthcare unique is that I have personally experienced numerous, often debilitating, health conditions throughout my life. My experience helps me as a Clinical Nutritionist and Functional Medical Practioner in multiple ways: to truly relate and empathise with my patients.
